Sticky Toffee Pudding: London, UK

British Desserts

A classic British dessert and personally one of my most favorites I have ever eaten has to be sticky toffee pudding. But contrary to the name of the dessert, as an American I was shocked to find that there was no pudding involved in the dessert.

Hawksmoor in London is a very swanky and luxurious restaurant that also serves sticky toffee pudding. Both times we went my sister and I called ahead to make sure we could dine in just for dessert, and we were able to. The dessert came out very fast and was extremely hot but the clotted cream on top cooled it to the perfect temperature. You need to make sure you got a bite of everything on your spoon. Clotted cream, sponge cake, and the ooey gooey toffee sauce, all that in one bite equals perfection. Sticky toffee pudding is quite rich but that didn’t stop me from coming back for more. Absolutely HEAVENLY.

What is Sticky Toffee Pudding?

Sticky Toffee Pudding is a dark sponge cake that is made with dates and drowned in sticky toffee sauce. The toffee sauce is warm and has a caramel undertone but that is what makes this a top tier delicacy. In London I had it topped with clotted cream (another fan favorite) or the other option to be topped with was a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Most anywhere you will go to eat sticky toffee pudding will be a dessert option. Though I only got to try sticky toffee pudding from one place in the UK, it was a very highly rated place to try it. London is the birthplace of Hawksmoor Steakhouse and Cocktail Bar so there are quite a few locations right there in the heart of the city. The only known locations of a Hawksmoor here in the US are in NYC and Chicago. And by gosh I did check and they do have sticky toffee pudding but sadly no clotted cream as an option to have on top, just ice cream. I know it wouldn’t be the same though.

Needless to say, sticky toffee pudding is at the very top of my most favorite desserts. It is unlike anything else I have ever had. The flavor is so unique, scrumptious, and I wish there were more places in the US that served sticky toffee pudding (with clotted cream obviously). But I guess I will just have to make a special trip to London to get what I so desire.

Verdict: YAY
