Borough Market: London, England

Borough Market is a must!

Borough Market is probably one of my most favorite foods markets I have ever been to. It has everything from fresh cheese, seafood, spices to chocolate covered strawberries, donuts, custard, made to order sandwiches, pasta and SO much more.

Borough Market was essentially just a food haul day and there is something there for everyone. Let’s start with lunch. My sister ordered a vegetarian sandwich from The Black Pig. There was quite the line but this is a pretty popular place to get a sandwich that was covered in parmesan cheese. It was huge and definitely something I would get again from the market. I opted for some Pad Thai that is right across from The Black Pig and the Authentic Thai Street Food vendor. The service there was incredibly fast and I received my order fairly quickly compared to a lot of other vendors. The food however was not the best. There was a huge assortment of vegetables but they were still very crunchy and not cooked much. There also didn’t taste like there was much sauce on the dish as well, I was really looking forward to trying the authentic peanut sauce and I barely was able to taste any peanut flavor at all. That was a very disappointing dish and not something I would recommend.

Dessert is always worth it!

The next two places we tried were by far the best and most worth it. Thankfully we stumbled upon one of the best bakeries in London, Bread Ahead. Please get yourself in line when you see this vendor. They have multiple vendors at the market and one of their bakery’s is located right there as well. There are so many baked goods it is almost impossible to choose what to get. I tried the Lemon Curd donut and Amaretti. The lemon curd donut had me at the first bite and as soon as I was done I got back in line to get another. Absolutely phenomenal. I am not sure how to describe what Amaretti is or what to compare it to. It was smaller and cube shaped covered in what I think was powdered sugar. The outside was just a tad hard but the inside was soft and the taste of Amaretti fills your mouth. These little baked goods were dense but omg so worth it.

Finally we got in line for Humble Crumble. Please if there is only one thing you get at Borough Market, let it be Humble Crumble. This blew my mind. This dessert base is a fruit and crumble mixture. You can either choose between their famous apple or mixed berry one. Then decide which type of shortbread you prefer (which makes it a crumble lol). After that you decide if you want hot, cold, or frozen custard on top. Then you can add on a scoop of whipped cream, marshmallow, chocolate, or yogurt. Finally for the garnish there is meringue, rose petals, almonds, and hazelnuts.

What I got…I ordered the two fruits with shortbread, hot custard, and the rose petal garnish. I wish I omitted the rose petal because I didn’t particularly enjoy the rose flavor but I did it for the gram. My sister got the whipped cream scoop and had wished she didn’t get that as well, it was just unnecessary and not important to the taste of the dessert. What had me wanting more was the hot custard. I wish I had a straw. I would have drank that straight from the glass. It was unbelievable. Humble crumble is amazing and if you’re lucky to stumble upon one of their locations do yourself a favor and place an order. You can’t go wrong.

Borough Market is an extraordinary market that offers fresh food and spices, baked goods, and hot foods. It is one of London’s finest markets in my opinion much better than Camden Market. There is so much variety and it is a busy place but it isn’t overwhelming like Camden is. If there is one thing I would say to someone traveling to London for the first time it would be to go to Borough Market. It is a gem and it does not disappoint.

Verdict: Yay!
